Academy participants are going to use cutting edge technology and have experiences well beyond the traditional classroom!
Get ready for an exciting adventure into the world of anatomy and physiology! Students will have the chance to explore the inner workings of mammalian organs through hands-on
dissections. Students will get to examine a preserved cow eye, pig kidney, pig heart, and sheep brain to see what they look like up close and learn how they work.
Through these dissections, students will find out how each organ plays a special role in keeping an organism alive. Our instructors will serve as guides as students uncover the mysteries of
biology, exploring how organs fit together to make the body systems we rely on every day. Throughout the experience, students will have the opportunity to ask questions and discover
fascinating facts about anatomy and physiology.
Get ready to explore the amazing world of pawpaw fruit! Pawpaw, also known as Asimina triloba, has a delicious taste that reminds us of bananas, mangoes, and pineapples—like a tropical fruit party in your mouth! Students will learn all about this unique fruit and why it's so special.
Students will dive into the research happening at Kentucky State University (KSU), the only place in the world with a full-time program dedicated to pawpaw. Students will find out how
scientists at KSU are working to grow more pawpaws, make orchards healthier, and test out different pawpaw varieties to see which ones taste the best.
Through hands-on activities, students will discover how pawpaws ripen, the best ways to store them, and even take a peek into the research on genetic diversity. Join us and explore this fascinating fruit, get your hands a little dirty, and maybe even taste some delicious pawpaw treats!
Experience the cutting edge of medical simulation within Kentucky State University’s College of Nursing. Students will work with high-fidelity simulators—mannequins that respond just like real patients. You can assess them, initiate treatment, and perform various medical procedures, all in a safe and controlled environment.
Each simulation room has varying mannequins and simulators that can provide different scenarios, allowing students to learn in diverse environments. It's an exciting way to explore
medical careers and gain practical skills in a fun, educational setting.
Become a lifesaver by learning CPR! This training is designed to give students the skills and knowledge they need to perform Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and become certified.
Students will start by learning the basics of CPR, including chest compressions and rescue breathing.
Through hands-on practice with an experienced instructor, students will master the techniques needed to save a life in an emergency and be ready to respond confidently to any situation.
Benson Research and Demonstration Farm
Come and tour the Harold R. Benson Research and Demonstration Farm for an amazing
experience filled with farm-based fun! This unique 300-acre farm at Kentucky State University offers a variety of educational opportunities, where students will learn about animals, plants, insects, and more.
Experience a behind-the-scenes tour and visit at CHI St. Joseph Health in Lexington, KY, designed for college students interested in healthcare and medical careers. You’ll learn about various medical fields, from nursing to emergency care, and explore the day-to-day operations of a major healthcare facility.
Expect interactive sessions with healthcare professionals, allowing you to ask questions and gain insights into the medical industry. It's perfect for those considering careers in healthcare or
just curious about how hospitals operate.
Get ready to design and pitch your very own mobile health unit! This experience will offer an exciting opportunity for students to ideate, design, and create a concept for a mobile health van
or bus that will be utilized by Kentucky State University. Working in teams, students will brainstorm innovative features, sketch blueprints, and develop a unique pitch for their design.
Students will learn about the key elements that make mobile health units effective, such as space optimization, technology integration, and accessibility. With guidance from industry
professionals, students will craft a design concept that meets real-world needs and think creatively to solve common challenges.
The Drone Experience
Students will be introduced to the exciting world of drones, giving them the chance to see them
in action and possibly fly one themselves.
There will be an overview of drone technology, learning about the different types of drones and
their uses. Experts will give a drone demonstration, showing off the amazing maneuvers and tricks drones can perform. Once completing this experience, students will have a deeper understanding of drone technology.
